irc in 2025
I did not take part in the IRC fever in the early 2000s. I was just a kid back then. But after looking it up, I now understand what the Chat tab on Ares Galaxy was for.
I got interested in IRC after reading about weechat, a terminal based IRC client. Combining it with cool-retro-term made me achieve peak retro vibe.
I am not going to make an argument for IRC here and I do not think you should start using it. I want to recall how real internet connections felt back in the early internet. Even when you couldn't see someone, you could feel close to another person even though it was over digital strings. Chat rooms was a place full of opportunity to meet someone new and to expand on different ideas. What I miss the most is that feeling. Being able to connect with others.
It sucks for me to admit that the more time goes on, the more dead the internet is becoming.
